xEPI enables central field device operation and network diagnostics using FDT/DTM technology
05/08 – March 18, 2008
Turck has added the xEPI Ethernet-Profibus coupler to its range of interface devices. The FDT/DTM supported interface enables vertical integration from the office right down to field devices on different communication levels such as HART via Profibus PA. In this way, the user can monitor his Profibus networks and assign parameters to the field instrumentation from a central location. xEPI is thus another important contribution to asset management, and can be used both as an active Profibus master (class 2) and a simple listener on the bus which doesn't actively take part in the bus traffic.
As a class 2 master, the xEPI communicates via a standard Ethernet protocol with TCP/IP. The ComDTM provided free-of-charge and an FDT frame application such as PACTware enable connection via the corporate network to any Profibus stations as required. The FDT/DTM technology allows the implementation of nested communication and the integration of other communication levels.
As a listener, xEPI can be implemented with the Profibus-Scope software tool as a permanently installed unit, allowing Profibus networks to be diagnosed conveniently via Ethernet. This interface can be used by maintenance and service personnel for implementing long-term monitoring for the detection of creeping irregularities such as in communication, signal monitoring or device diagnostics, and it can also be used for the parameterisation of field devices.
